I bought this book for maintenance on a 1994 Toyota Pick-up. Not very helpful because the information and drawings I needed were inaccurate. I bought a Haynes Manual and found it to be much more reliable.
I prefer those really heavy manuals that has everything from a-z on the viehical, but this manual will do in a pinch. It has all the basic stuff that someone with minimal tools and experiance needs.Here is a hint that the book does not directly tell you. Get a wiring disgram and if any of the under hood info has faded on your viehical replace it.
I too feel fleeced by the promises made by this book. There amount of specific, useful information, if any, contained in this book totals perhaps _2_ pages. Don’t be fooled like I was. Calling this book a repair manual, imho, is misrepresentation.
Knew what product was but was surprised at the low price for early model vehicles. Got it for my grandson who just bought his 1st Toyota and he was ecsstatic with it! Chilton still 10-1 better than Haynes! Bill
Haynes manuals are great for helping you figure out things on your vehicle when you don’t have money to have it fixed at a dealership. Illustrations are usually applicable to the situation, and wiring diagrams are simple to follow. I’m a fairly accomplished mechanic, and I have a Haynes manual for everything I own.
I purchased this book to work on my 1990 4runner and it is worthless. The diagrams show very little if any detail. DO NOT PURCHASE.
I bought this book specifically because it advertised electrical wiring diagrams and schematics. The diagrams it contains are virtually worthless. Examples: does not mention headlights except how to change the lamp, does not acknowledge the instrument lighting at all. If you need to troubleshoot your electrical system, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!
Anybody who is going to try more than basic car maintenance should have one. It can help you make sure the auto parts shop gets you the right parts and tell you the specific tricks to make a repair smoothly on a specific vehicle.
According to the cover, this manual covers all 4-runners, pickups, and Landcruisers from 1989-1996.
I bought it for information on a 1994 Landcruiser. If you have a Landcruiser in this year range, DO NOT buy this manual; buy the Haynes manual. I’ve had my Landcruiser now for 5+ years and before that I had an ’86 Toyota pickup for 5 years (I think I had the Chilton for that truck). The differences between the pickup and the Landcruiser are far too numerous and important to cover them in the same manual.
So, if you have a Pickup or a 4runner, you might be good, but if you have a Landcruiser, buy the Haynes.
If you plan on doing any appreciable maintenance past oil changes, brakes, etc., you should definitely consider stepping all the way to the Factory Service Manual available from the dealer. It will probably be on the order of $150, but you’ll cover that soon. Also see techinfo.toyota.com. You used to be able to have a short term log-in for only a few bucks that gave you access to the manual.

I have Toyota 4Runner. I had some problems and I would like to understand them. I purchased the book to help me to understand the operation and cause of problemes. If some one needs some lists of disassembly and assembly steps without requiring explanation drawings maybe he would find this book helpful. However, I am not satisfied with the drawings. There is very little about transmission. There is no diagnostic codes for transmission. The book does not have good sistematic structure.
