This is a frustrating book. While I understand that cramming everything that needs to be known about a car between two covers is a nearly impossible task, it seemd like nothing I wanted to do was adequately explained.

The switch for my AC/heater gave out…the explanation for how to remove it was complicated and confusing. I’m not sure if I can do it without completely disassembling the heater control panel or not. My speedo cable squeaks…I can’t even find any mention of the speedo cable in the book. There’s an explanation of how to pull the instrument cluster…but for some reason, it doesn’t mention where any of the cables or wires that connect to it are located.

I browsed some other sections, and they seemed just as confusingly written as the areas I was interested in.

I would only get this manual as a supplement to another one. It’s got the information that someone with a good deal of experience needs to work on their car, but it isn’t good enough for an amateur, even a fairly experienced one like me.

Basic stuff for the almost beginner. No info on complicated repairs or the simple stuff everyone is supposed to know. Don’t lose your owner’s manual, plub gaps, etc are not in this manual.

Just as most Chilton’s manuals are, it’s helpful. Schematics and information that can’t be found, or difficult to locate, on the internet. My only problem with the manual is there are a few small incorrect details in the manual, though nothing major. All in all, it’s definitely worth the money.

While I know Chilton has a decent reputation and they tend to cover things in depth I am extremely unhappy with this book. Many manuals such as this one try too hard to fit many many years and models of vehicles in one book and, unfortunately, Samurai owners suffer in this paticular case. I suspect that if you own a Tracker or Sidekick you’ll get something out of this book but it is certainly lacking on coverage of the Samurai – and worse yet, if you have a carbureted model you’d be better of looking for general how-to online because you won’t get anything more in this book. As an example if you look up fuel tank and look under the “Carbureted Models” section you’re greeted with a bold notice that says “This is a general procedure and slight differences may be applicable for your vehicle” and the instructions basically say no more than to disconnect battery, drain fuel, disconnect hoses, and remove the tank. As in nearly every other section that I’ve encountered you are given no diagrams for the older sammys and in some cases your lucky to even find diagrams for the TFI sammys.

This is not a full service manual but it is the next best thing that you will be able to find. Some information is missing on the 1.8l, but this is probably the best thing you will find.

This is the only manual that covers the 1.8l Sidekick Sport, so I got what I needed. As usual, good for the DIY’er but won’t necessarily cover everything. I wouldn’t be without one.
